Priyanka Arul Mohan as Shenba

The adventure drama movie stars Priyanka Arul Mohan as Shenba, a small-town girl who dreams of going to South Korea. Shenba’s world expands when her school teacher, Ms Matilda, organises a fancy dress competition and offers her to take part as Shenbagam, the unknown Indian girl whose fate led her across the seas to ascend the throne as a queen of South Korea.

People amazed by the teenage Shenba’s performance in the fancy dress competition, leading everyone to regard Shenba as Shenbagam. Likewise, Shenba attempts to advance her language skills to visit South Korea at least once in her life. Although her family and friends regard it as a mere obsession that shall fade away with time, it was unlikely for Shenba; her love for South Korea deepened with every passing day.

Aspirations Stay On Hold

Shenba transitions from a teenage girl to a young adult, but there is something that remains unchanged: her dream to visit South Korea. On the other hand, her father aspires for Shenba to be efficient enough to take charge of his wee mess (hotel) and transform it into a decent hotel. In this process, he sends Shenba to the nearby city to graduate in hospitality. While aspirations stay on hold, Shenba finds herself falling more for her teenage crush, who transitions into boyfriend. Shenba’s love towards Mani was all about trust, forgiveness, and yearning.

Mani, being a struggler, tries to justify his actions by just being a man yet to grow up. Alarmed by Shenba’s arguments with her mother, Shenba’s father decides to get her married off.  As she is already in love with Mani, she finds herself in dismay, and due to a tragic past shared by Shenba’s Appa(father) and Mani, her father disapproves of them seeing each other.

Eventually, leading to her family disowning her, she sets out on a journey with Mani. The couple moves to the city, and Mani gets Shenba a room to stay. A few days later, Appa visits Shenba, but Mani appears, stating that Shenba doesn’t want to see him and ultimately takes the money her father provides Shenba for her Korean trip. Mani ensures Shenba secures a visa to work in South Korea, but abandons her mid-flight.

Jun Ho, a vlogger and a native, comes to the leading lady’s aid and helps her navigate life away from India. Shenba’s life takes a turn when she begins to work for Eomma. Portrayed as a frail senior who aspires to be wild, fearless, and independent over anything else. The story takes a bewitching turn with the entry of Kim Hye Jin, who was previously seen in Netflix drama Squid Game. Eomma and Shenba take matters into their hands and, with Jun Ho’s help, they turn dreams into reality.

Made In Korea: Is it a Dreamy Teenage Aspiration or a Nightmare?

The feel- good adventure drama is beyond just a diverse cast and a dreamy teenage aspiration. It is a testament to self-worth, diverse friendships, ambitions, and family dynamics. To make it simple, Made In Korea resonates with BOL4’s song, To My Youth. That describes agonising pain for not being trusted by the family and friends. Ra Karthik, who is the writer and director of the film, exhibits love, kindness, friendship, and life away from home spectacularly.

Made In Korea: Visual Brilliance and Writing

The principal photography team and the director have brilliantly covered major locations in the film. Notably, Namsan Tower, Mapo Bridge, Han River, life in Korea, local artists, lifestyle, fashion, architecture, tradition and food. Representation of Indo-Kimchi fried rice, Somaek, the need for a bus card, and building a partnership away from home speaks a ton about the team's research on Indian women navigating life in South Korea. Likewise, the elephant scene portrays the serene beauty of Kolappalur, India, and exhibits the rural life in South India.

Diverse Cast: Commendable Collaboration and Moving Performances

Priyanka Arul Mohan displays the vulnerability and impulsive behaviour of the character incredibly. Not to forget, the character evolves emotionally, as she carries herself with great confidence. This part happens to be highly understated. Compared to her previous films, this time her script choice sets her apart. She does something comparatively different in terms of her representation from her previous film. Kim Hye Jin brings life to the drama through her excellent performance; her entry brings smiles to the audience’s faces. Her affection towards Shemba moves the viewers. She portrays affection, resilience and vulnerability with great ease. Through this collaboration, the women in the show exhibit a heartwarming friendship. Additionally, No Ho-jin connects the drama exceptionally; his effervescent acting also brings colour to the drama. Rishikanth performed incredibly, portraying Mani’s role. His performance was deeply polarising and sympathetic.

Final Views: Rhythmic Synergy and Sluggish Beginning

The drama appears sluggish at the beginning, but the momentum eventually picks up, leading to the narrative payoff. We have settled at a solid 3.9/5 for the lush visualisation. Hesham Abdul Wahab attempts to take a chance with the rhythmic synergy. The brilliant melodic structures and blending of complex South Indian music with K-pop beats have actually paid off; his work merits a solid 4.8/5.
